Build it in or activate it later
Radon doesn't care whether a home is new. Many newer Omaha-area homes are built with radon-resistant features, but they still need to be tested.
Radon-resistant construction typically includes
- A gravel layer under the slab
- Plastic sheeting over the gravel
- Sealed and caulked slab openings
- A vent pipe from below the slab to the roof
Passive vs. active
A passive pipe relies on natural airflow and often doesn't reduce radon enough by itself. Adding an inline fan converts it to an active system, usually at lower cost than a full retrofit.
What to do in a new home
Test after you move in. If you have a passive pipe and results are elevated, ask a licensed pro about activating it.
